1QUESTION
What is wind, really?
We can’t see it, but we can feel it.
Air that the sun warms up becomes lighter and rises.
Then cooler air from around it moves in to take its place.
This in-and-out movement of air is the flow of wind.
Because places on Earth have different warmth and coldness,
wind is being born somewhere all the time.
Use your hand to feel the difference between warm air near a heater or in the sun and cooler air in the shade.
3QUESTION
What’s the difference between a south wind and a north wind?
We often hear “○○ wind” on the weather forecast.
Wind names tell us which direction the wind comes from.
If wind blows from the south toward the north, it’s a “south wind.”
If it blows from the north toward the south, it’s a “north wind.”
So “south wind” means wind that came from the south.
Using a compass or map, try to guess which direction today’s wind is coming from.
4QUESTION
Why do spring winds and autumn winds feel different?
In each season, warm and cold places on Earth are different.
In spring, warm air often comes from the south.
In autumn, cool air often comes from the north.
These movements of air make the spring-like and autumn-like winds.
In the same park, smell the air in spring and in autumn. Does the “scent of the wind” change?
5QUESTION
Why is wind in a typhoon so strong?
It’s much stronger than normal wind.
Around a typhoon, the difference in air pressure becomes very big.
Air tries hard to move from places with higher pressure to places with lower pressure.
This creates very strong winds.
On a typhoon day, it’s like the wind is running at full speed.
During a typhoon, don’t go outside. Watch the trees and clouds from a safe place indoors.
6QUESTION
Why does the wind suddenly get strong between buildings or at corners?
This is sometimes called “building wind.”
When tall buildings stand close together, the path for air becomes narrow.
As air passes through the narrow place, it is squeezed and speeds up.
River water also flows faster in narrow parts of the river.
Wind between buildings is a bit like that.
When walking in town, notice if the wind suddenly gets stronger when you turn a corner.
7QUESTION
Why do we feel colder when the wind blows?
Even at the same temperature, wind makes us feel colder.
Your body warms the air close to your skin.
When wind blows, this warm air is quickly taken away.
Then new, cooler air keeps touching your body again and again.
So even at the same temperature, more heat leaves your body when it’s windy,
and you feel colder.
On a bicycle, compare how your face feels when you stop and when you ride fast.
8QUESTION
What is the sound of wind?
What makes the “whooo” or “gooo” sounds we call wind?
Wind itself really has no sound.
But when it hits trees, houses, wires, or gaps,
those things shake and vibrate and make sound.
Leaves, bamboo, gaps in buildings…
depending on where it passes, the “voice” of the wind changes.
On a windy day, open the window a little and listen carefully. What different wind sounds can you hear?
9QUESTION
What other “whys” about wind can you think of?
Let’s make your own “wind map” of your town.
IDEAS
Here are some idea questions:
How is wind near the sea different from wind near the mountains?
How strong must the wind be to ring a wind chime?
What kind of wind is just right for flying a kite?
How different is the wind on top of a tall building from at the ground?
Write down how the wind feels in the park, by the river, or in the schoolyard and make your own wind map.
