わたあめ？綿？ふわふわしたあの白いかたまり。Are they like cotton candy or cotton? Those fluffy white things in the sky.

A cloud is really a big group of very tiny drops of water or bits of ice.
Water rises from puddles, seas, and rivers. Up in the sky it cools down and becomes tiny drops.
When many of these tiny drops gather together, our eyes see them as a white cloud.

The drops in a cloud are very small and very light.
There are also invisible upward winds blowing high in the sky.
Because of this, the drops fall very slowly and are held up by the wind.
So they look like they are floating in the sky for a long time.
💭小さなほこりが、なかなか床に落ちないでフワッとまっているのと少しにているね。It’s a bit like tiny dust that floats in the air and doesn’t fall to the floor quickly.

反対に、横に強い風がふくと、うすくのびた雲になったり、
小さな雲がちぎれてならんだりするんだよ。
Cloud shapes change with the strength and direction of the wind and the temperature of the air.
When the air rises gently, clouds can grow big and puffy.
When there is a strong wind blowing sideways, clouds become thin and long,
or many small clouds can break apart and line up.

さっきまで白かったのに、だんだん暗くなる雲。They were white, but then they slowly turn dark.
だから、下から見ると光が少なくて暗く見える。
じつは雲そのものが黒いのではなく、光がぬけにくいから黒っぽく見えるんだよ。
Rain clouds are filled with many water drops.
When there are so many drops, sunlight can’t pass through easily.
So from below, the clouds look darker because little light comes through.
The cloud itself is not black; it just looks dark because light can’t pass.

High in the sky, there are always large, invisible winds blowing.
The winds push the clouds, so they drift along together.
That’s why clouds look like they are “taking a walk” across the sky.
🧭風の向きをしらべると、雲の流れる方向もだいたい同じ向きになっているよ。If you check which way the wind blows, you’ll see clouds moving in almost the same direction.

When wind hits a mountain, the air is pushed upward.
Higher air is colder, so tiny drops form more easily there.
Because the air cools and makes clouds in just that spot,
it looks like the mountain has a cloud hat on its top.

飛行機雲はどうしてできるの？How are airplane clouds (contrails) made?
空にまっすぐ引かれた白い線。Those straight white lines drawn across the sky.
その氷のつぶの列が、白い線（飛行機雲）として見えるんだ。
風がつよいとすぐにくずれて広がることもあるよ。
Airplane engines blow out warm air and water vapor.
High in the sky, that warm air meets very cold air and quickly turns into tiny ice crystals.
A line of these ice crystals looks like a white streak (contrail).
On windy days, the line can break and spread quickly.
✈️飛行機雲が長くのこる日と、すぐ消える日を見くらべてみるとおもしろいよ。Compare days when contrails last a long time and days when they disappear quickly. It’s interesting.

雲があっという間になくなっちゃうのは、どうして？Why do clouds sometimes disappear so quickly?
さっきまであったのに、気づいたら空が真っ青なとき。They were there a moment ago, then suddenly the sky is all blue.
そうすると、雲はスーッと消えたように見えるんだ。
The water drops in the cloud melt back into the air and become invisible.
When sunlight warm them up or they mix with different air,
the drops turn back into gas and become clear.
Then the cloud looks like it has quietly slipped away.
